Tjaldsvæði
What do I do?
An approved campsite — the place to spend the night, since wild camping is essentially illegal in Iceland.
Campervans and caravans must use organised sites, and tents need the landowner's permission anywhere else, so plan around the tjaldsvæði network — most towns have one, usually open June to September with no booking needed. A caravan variant (E05.62, hjólhýsasvæði) marks sites for trailers and motorhomes.
