Warning · J39.11
Narrow paving, gravel shoulders
Einbreitt slitlag
What do I do?
The paved strip ahead is too narrow for two cars to pass on it. When you meet oncoming traffic, slow down and ease your right-side wheels onto the gravel shoulder — gently, no sudden steering.
Very common on quieter rural roads: a single band of tarmac five metres wide or less, with loose gravel either side. The danger is dropping onto the shoulder at speed — the grip change can pull the car sideways, which is a classic tourist rollover.
