Difficult road (4x4 needed)
Illfær vegur
What do I do?
ILLFÆR VEGUR means a proper high-clearance 4x4 — expect rough fords, rocks and mud. The milder SEINFARINN VEGUR plate means a normal car can make it, just very slowly.
These yellow plates hang under the red warning triangle at the start of a route and grade how bad it gets. The scale runs seinfarinn (slow going) to illfær (barely passable, jeeps only) to torleiði (extreme, modified vehicles) — most of these routes are F-roads, where rental insurance for two-wheel-drive cars is void.
