Road number
Vegnúmer
What do I do?
The number tells you the road's grade: one digit is a primary route (1 is the Ring Road), two digits a regional road, three a local link. An F in front means a highland track — don't follow it without a proper 4x4 and a rental contract that allows it.
The black-on-white shield usually rides on direction signs rather than standing alone. A dashed frame (F16.21) means the numbered road lies ahead via this route, not that you're on it yet. An empty shield (F16.31) marks an unnumbered road that the road authority doesn't maintain — a hint about what condition to expect.
