Single-lane tunnel
Einbreið göng
What do I do?
The tunnel ahead fits one car in places. Check the signs at the mouth — one direction has priority, and the other pulls into the passing bays (marked "Útskot") to let oncoming traffic through. Lights on, always.
A few older Icelandic tunnels still have single-lane sections with passing bays, most famously in the Westfjords and around Siglufjörður. If the bays are on your side, you're normally the one who waits in them; take it slowly and watch for headlights ahead.
