Sheep on the road

Sauðfé á vegi

From spring to autumn sheep graze unfenced beside the roads — and lambs bolt across without warning.

They roam free

Icelandic sheep are not fenced in. Lambs often stand on the opposite side from a ewe and dart across the road to reach her just as you pass.

What to do

Slow down whenever you see sheep near the road and expect the unexpected. If you hit livestock you are liable for it — report it to the farmer or the police (112).
